Sebastian was a captain of the first cohort of the Praetorian Guard. He was respected by all and highly regarded by the emperor, who was unaware of his Christian faith. Sebastian practiced apostleship among his comrades, visiting and encouraging Christians imprisoned for their faith in Christ.
Emperor Maximian forced him to choose between serving as his soldier or following Jesus Christ. Sebastian was condemned to be executed by being shot with arrows: the emperor's soldiers took him to the stadium, stripped him, tied him to a post, and rained arrows upon him, leaving him for dead.
While barely alive, he was rescued by his friends and nursed back to health by Irene, a noble Roman Christian. Once recovered, he confronted the emperor to denounce the persecution of Christians. This time, Maximian ordered him to be beaten to death.
